Started in 2018 as a two-year initiative, the GCWEP isn’t done yet.
About GCWEP
Convening
In 2018, the US Water Alliance established the Water Equity Taskforce, a cross-sector, multi-city endeavor with the goal of intentionally making water management outcomes and processes equitable.
Two years and seven cities
The Taskforce was a two-year effort that brought together seven cities—Atlanta, Buffalo, Camden, Cleveland, Louisville, Milwaukee, and Pittsburgh—to increase understanding of the challenges, opportunities, and promising interventions to promote water equity in each city.
Collaboration
The Cleveland Water Equity Taskforce was established with leadership from local non-profits, utilities, and community advocates committed to water issues. Our goal was to develop strategies to align resources and capacities to advance equity in Northeast Ohio through smart water management
Learning
In addition to meeting regularly, we also met with other Taskforce cities at US Water Alliance-hosted Learning Exchanges. These exchanges supported collaboration, capacity building, and knowledge exchange on water equity between our peers in different regions and cities.
Roadmap
At the conclusion of the Taskforce initiative, we produced “An Equitable Water Future: Cleveland,” a “roadmap” outlining challenges, opportunities, and potential solutions to promote equitable water management in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio.
Continuation
In order to continue our progress, the members of the Cleveland Taskforce have become the Greater Cleveland Water Equity Partners. As the GCWEP, we’re working to implement the recommendations in the Roadmap, stay informed of water equity issues, and find strategies and solutions to address those issues.
